frequently asked questions.

terms and conditions

It’s important for us to know what kind of home you have—before we agree to send one of our kittens to join you. You will need to have an adequately large living space for your new cat—Maine Coons are some of the largest domestic cats, and take up a lot of room. They are also full of energy, and will need some way to exercise off that excess energy in order to be kept happy and healthy. An outdoor enclosure for your cat (one that is escape-proof) is recommended, harness training is encouraged, and adequate scratching areas (such as cat trees) are a must for this breed. Please check our process page for more information.

pricing

Maine coon kittens that are sold as pets are usually in a $2000-3500price range, depending on traits such as size, gender, and color. As we are not a business, nor are we “backyard breeders”, we are very selective with the care our kittens receive, and that they are all provided amazing veterinary care from a cat-focused veterinarian. The price to pick up a kitten from Somnolentia is a standard $2500, and if you would prefer to have your kitten brought to you (currently only available in the U.S.), we can discuss pricing for delivery. Sometimes kittens that are reserved for the cattery may be available for a higher price than standard.

how do we pick?

We work on a first come basis. The cattery has the option to hold a kitten in reserve for ourselves, and after that we take a deposit to hold a kitten for buyers. We try not to do long waiting lists, but if there isn’t an available kitten you are interested in from the litters available, then we may have a spot for you on the current waiting list as we await new litters.

do we offer older kittens?

Short answer—sometimes! Sometimes we have a kitten that has been overlooked by others and has grown up in the cattery. If an older kitten is preferred (we understand, kitten messes, tiny claws, and rambunctious attitudes can be too much sometimes), you are welcome to put down a deposit on the kitten you choose, and we can discuss how long to wait before sending them home with you.

will my kitten always look like this?

Maybe! But probably not. While we often adopt out litters early, sometimes we hold on to kittens for a bit longer so that we, as the cattery, have a better idea of what they will look like as they age. Remember—Maine Coons retain their playful attitudes, and even kittens are large. It can take up to five full years before they reach their full growth, so a one year old kitten is still a kitten. Around two years of age is when Maine Coons really start developing their adult coat. So a 6-month old kitten that you see on the site that might not have a fluffy mane yet is still very likely to grow into one.
